Projector was designed for automatic positioning contigs from an unfinished prokaryotic
genome on a template genome of a close relative strain or species. Projector
mapped 69% of Lactococcus lactis subsp. cremoris MG1363 contigs against ORFs of
L. lactis subsp. lactis IL1403. 93% of subsequent gap closure PCRs were successful.
Because increasing numbers of bacterial genomes are sequenced, Projector could
in case of known sequenced counterparts, provide an efficient way to close a significant
number of remaining gaps.
